Credit Card vs Debit Card
Most Vermont operators accept debit cards but block credit cards for sports betting deposits. This is industry-standard in regulated US markets; operators discourage bettors from gambling on borrowed money. If your card is declined, double-check it's not a credit card.
Why Banks Sometimes Block Sportsbook Deposits
Even with a legitimate debit card, some banks decline sports betting transactions by default. The technical reason: sportsbook charges arrive under merchant category code (MCC) 7995; gambling. Some banks (especially smaller community banks and certain credit unions) block all 7995 charges as a default risk-management measure.
Fixes if your debit card is declined:
- Call your bank and ask them to whitelist MCC 7995 for your card
- Try a different debit card from a different bank (Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America generally don't block by default)
- Use PayPal or Play+ as a bypass; the operator pulls from those services, not directly from your card
- Use ACH direct bank transfer; sometimes processed differently than card transactions
Withdrawal Mechanics
Withdrawals back to a debit card typically take 1–3 business days from when the operator approves the cashout. The funds appear as a refund or credit on your card. Some banks post the credit instantly when they receive the request; others wait until the standard settlement cycle (1–3 days). If you need same-day cashout, use PayPal instead.
You can only withdraw to a card you've previously deposited from. The first withdrawal usually has to go back to the same card; subsequent withdrawals can sometimes be routed to other linked methods, depending on operator.
Operator Notes
- DraftKings; accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover. Lowest minimum at $5.
- FanDuel; accepts Visa, Mastercard, Discover. Card-deposit decline rate is the lowest of the three operators (FanDuel works hardest to make the card flow succeed).
- Fanatics; accepts Visa, Mastercard. Discover support has been spotty since launch.
When Debit Card Makes Sense
- You want the simplest possible deposit flow; no third-party wallet setup
- You're depositing modest amounts ($50–$500) per session
- You're claiming the welcome offer and want minimum friction
- You don't need same-day withdrawals (use PayPal if you do)
