Total Bet (Over/Under)
Bet whether the combined final score will be over or under a posted number. The score is independent of who wins; only the total points matter.
What a Total Bet Is
A total; sometimes called an "over/under"; is a bet on how many combined points (or goals, or runs) the two teams will score in a game. The sportsbook posts a number; you bet whether the actual combined score will be over or under that line. Like spreads, totals are typically priced at –110 on both sides.
Vermont Example; Celtics at Knicks
The total for a Celtics-Knicks game is posted at 222.5:
- Over 222.5 (–110)
- Under 222.5 (–110)
If the final score is Celtics 118 – Knicks 110 (combined 228), the over hits. Final score 112 – 105 (combined 217); the under hits. Final 112 – 110 (combined 222); the under hits. Final 120 – 105 (combined 225); the over hits. Who wins is irrelevant.
Whole-Number Totals & Pushes
If the total is posted as a whole number (222 instead of 222.5) and the combined score lands exactly on it (Celtics 115, Knicks 107 = 222), the bet is a "push" and your stake is refunded. The half-point version eliminates the push.
Total Bet Sizes by Sport
- NFL: Totals typically 38–55 points. A 47-point game means roughly 24–23 expected.
- NBA: Totals typically 210–240 points. Higher pace = higher total.
- NHL: Totals typically 5.5–6.5 goals. Lower-scoring sport, so totals move in half-goals.
- MLB: Totals typically 7–10 runs.
- Soccer: Totals typically 2.5–3.5 goals.
What Moves a Total
Totals shift on a number of factors:
- Weather: Wind, rain, or cold dramatically reduce NFL totals; warm domes raise them
- Injuries: A star scorer out drops the total; a backup high-volume scorer can raise it
- Pace: Two up-tempo NBA teams playing each other often see totals 8–10 points higher than the implied average
- Goalie matchups: NHL totals move 0.5 goals or more based on the listed starting goalies
- Wind / weather in MLB: Wind blowing out at Fenway raises Red Sox game totals materially
Alternate Totals
VT operators offer "alternate totals"; you can move the line in your favor (at worse odds) or against you (for better odds). Want the Celtics-Knicks over 235 (much higher than the posted 222.5)? You can take it at, say, +300. Want the under 200 (much lower)? You can take it at +250. These let bettors target specific score expectations.
Operator Notes for Vermont
Totals are usually closest across operators; but a half-point difference matters. Always check all three Vermont operators (DraftKings, FanDuel, Fanatics) before placing a total. A half-point off the key number can swing 5–10% of the bet's expected value.
