College Sports Betting in Vermont
Vermont prohibits player props on in-state college teams; most notably the UVM Catamounts; but allows spreads, moneylines, and totals on UVM games. Out-of-state college betting (including March Madness) is unrestricted.
What's Allowed on UVM Games
- Allowed: Point spread, moneyline, total points (over/under)
- Allowed: First-half / second-half lines, period totals
- Prohibited: Individual player props (points, rebounds, assists, etc.)
- Prohibited: Same Game Parlay legs that depend on individual UVM player outcomes
The In-State College Prop Restriction
Vermont's enabling statute; H.127; prohibits sportsbooks from offering player props on in-state college teams. In practice this means the UVM Catamounts; University of Vermont's athletic program; cannot have individual player markets posted at DraftKings, FanDuel, or Fanatics. Game-level markets (spread, moneyline, totals) remain available because they don't single out individual players.
Why the Rule Exists
The restriction is a common pattern across US states. The concern is that college athletes are unpaid (or modestly paid through NIL deals), still in school, and arguably more vulnerable to harassment from disappointed bettors than professional athletes. Restricting individual player props on local teams reduces the surface area for that harassment without forcing operators to delist the games entirely.
UVM Athletics; What's Available
UVM does not field a football team and has no FBS program in Vermont, so the practical scope of the rule is narrower than it might seem. The team most affected is UVM men's basketball, which competes in America East and reaches the NCAA tournament periodically. UVM women's basketball, hockey, soccer, and other sports fall under the same restriction. You can still bet game-level markets on every UVM game; you just won't see Aaron Deloney rebound props or Quinn Slazinski points props.
Out-of-State College Betting; Unrestricted
Vermont's restriction applies only to in-state college teams. Out-of-state college sports; Duke basketball, Alabama football, Connecticut basketball, Boston College, Dartmouth, March Madness brackets; are completely unrestricted in Vermont. You can place player props, futures, parlays, and live in-play wagers on any non-VT college team or game.
March Madness in Vermont
March Madness; the NCAA Division I men's basketball tournament; is the largest college betting event of the year and a major driver of Vermont handle. The DLL's March 2026 Sports Wagering Summary Report shows basketball alone accounted for $9.57M of the $21.84M monthly handle (43.8%), driven heavily by tournament action. Vermont bettors can construct full brackets, place per-round futures, and bet game lines and player props on every team in the tournament except UVM (if and when they qualify); though to date UVM hasn't been a March Madness mainstay.
College Football in Vermont
Vermont has no in-state FBS football program, so the in-state restriction has no practical scope in football. All college football; bowl games, conference championships, the College Football Playoff, Heisman Trophy futures; is fully available with player props at every Vermont operator.
Future of the Restriction
Could Vermont eventually allow UVM player props? It would require either an amendment to H.127 or new legislation. Other states have moved both directions on this; some loosened the rule, others tightened it after publicized incidents of player harassment. As of 2026, there's no public indication that Vermont plans to change the rule.
